Cherry Blossom Viewing and Fun With other NAAAP Chapters

Despite the start of some inclement weather, we had over 30 people by dinner time from both Philly, NC, and of course our own DC members in attendance. We drank beer at a sports bar, had dinner at MeiWah and danced the night away at Pasha. The tradition was well lived today and will continue. We talked about going to Philly for a day trip and down to NC for a weekend getaway at the Beach. Stay tuned!!

Thanks to everyone who braved the cold and wind to come out to CURRENT last night for our first Networking Mixer of 2009. We saw a lot of new faces. Shout-outs to Yi, Dean, Kon, Hyok, Bao, Victoria, Ralen, Olam, Alan, Xu, Debbie, Caroline, and more. I hope everyone got to meet the new executive committee and board members. Congrats to Eric for winning the raffle prize. We had between 50-60 people come through.

We have a lot of things going on for April. We will be hosting a group from our North Carolina NAAAP Chapter as they come and celebrate the Cherry Blossom Street Festival on Sat. April 12 and partake in some socializing at dinner and the DC Nightlife.

We have a fundraising NAAAP-DC Networking Mixer at Lotus Lounge on April 17th to raise funds for our very 1st NAAAP-DC Dragon Boat Race team. Please come out and support

On April 22, 2008 we will be working with CAPAL and co-hosting a Young Management Professional Workshop.

Ice Skating @ the National Gallery of Art

Hello everyone!

Thanks again for coming out to the ice skating event this past Sunday. It was great to meet some of you for the first time and to see some familiar faces as well.

A good time was had by all as we braved the elements and enjoyed some fun ice skating in the company of good friends and plenty of hot cocoa! Afterwards, some of us went to check out the Smithsonian museums while others ventured out to Gallery place for dinner and a movie. Thanks to the 20+ attendees who came out for this fun winter activity. Keep warm!

NAAAP-DC is looking for a few great men and women to join the NAAAP-DC Board.

Qualified NAAAP-DC members who have been members for 1 year and have their membership dues paid are eligible to join the NAAAP-DC Board.

Help shape the organization by setting up events, bringing in corporate sponsorships, increasing our membership base, and working with community outreach. Your time and dedication is a couple hours a week consisting of writing emails, communicating with other board members, coming to our events and attending a board meeting once a month.

NAAAP-DC is part of a larger national organization that provides professional development, social and career networking, leadership and empowerment, and community engagement.

With over 26 chapters across the U.S., NAAAP is poised to build better relationships and help ease the transition of newly transplanted NAAAP members and create stronger networks for the NAAAP members within a metropolitan city. Ghosts of Georgetown Walking Tour

We had a great group of 20+ folks who made it out to this walking tour in Georegtown. Stories of gruesome murders and haunting spirits were recounted as we walked past the respective crime scenes in Georgetown.

Some of the stories are considered urban legends so they should not deter you from feeling safe in Georgetown. The DC police has always kept this trendy neighborhood safe. After the tour, we headed to a restaurant for a late night dinner to chat and enjoy the Georgtown night life.

Screening of "DARK MATTER"
October 4, 2007, Thurs 7 p.m. @ Landmark E St. Cinema

NAAAP-DC is the supporting community sponsor of the Oct. 4 screening at Landmark E St. Cinema of: DARK MATTER, directed by Chen Shi-Zheng. In his bold, chilling feature film debut, Chinese opera director Chen Shi-zheng examines the bitter politics of academia and the clashing of disparate cultures.

Liu Ye (CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER) plays Liu Xing, a modest but brilliant graduate student from Beijing who comes to an American university to study the origins of the universe under famed cosmologist Jacob Reiser (Aidan Quinn). Recognizing the student's enormous talent, Reiser turns Liu Xing into his protege, bringing him to prestigious academic conferences and inviting him to department gatherings outside the classroom. As a foreigner in a new environment, Liu Xing is acclimated into American culture by the kind and well-meaning Joanna Silver, a wealthy university patron played by Meryl Streep, and an American waitress at a nearby cafe, with whom he strikes up a casual flirtation. During his tireless research on dark matter, the unseen substance that shapes the universe, Liu Xing stumbles across findings that threaten Reiser's established model. Against his professor's stern warnings, and blinded by his own ambitions, he publishes his sweeping dissertation, only to have it ultimately rejected. With a jobless, bleak future ahead of him, on top of the impending shame of his family back in China, he resorts to one final, cataclysmic act.

Based loosely on true events that occurred at the University of Iowa in 1991, DARK MATTER won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize for best film relating to science or technology at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

Final Tennis Outing of the Season with Lessons
October 7, 2007 Sun 2 p.m. - Oakton High School

Come on out and meet other avid tennis players for some fun rallying, friendly competition, socializing and tennis lessons provided by Jacky Cheong. Jacky is a USPTA Coach with over 12 years playing experience and a USTA ranked tournament player in the Mid-Atlantic. He has been teaching beginners and experienced players alike for over 9 seasons.

Among the historic streets, manicured gardens, and Victorian row houses of DC's finest neighborhood, lies deep, dark secrets about a forgotten past. Come along to hear about the ghosts and spirits that still haunt our fine little city . . . if you dare. The tour will be provided by Mobile Tours (www.mobiletours.org) and will last 1 hour and 15 minutes.

We can hangout in Georgetown for drinks/dessert/coffee after the walk to take in the nightlife there . . . that is if we haven't been scared away! =)

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, Cafe Japone and Universal Studios Home Entertainment are inviting comedy fans to celebrate "National Knocked Up Night" on September 25th, the official DVD release date of the hilarious comedy hit Knocked Up and the unofficial excuse to celebrate in ways left strictly to the imagination.
On September 25th, in a salute to the year's most anticipated comedy DVD release, Cafe Japone and friends (DC APA FILM, NAAAP-DC, DC RED CARPETS, etc.) will offer an array of specially created Knocked Up merchandise and promotional prizes to guests.

Final Tennis Outing (with lessons) of the Season Come on out and meet other avid tennis players for some fun rallying, friendly competition, socializing and tennis lessons provided by Jacky Cheong. Jacky is a USPTA Coach with over 12 years playing experience and a USTA ranked tournament player in the Mid-Atlantic. He has been teaching beginners and experienced players alike for over 9 seasons. 8th Annual DC Asian Pacific American Film Festival at Various Venues in the DC Metropolitan Area

The 2007 DC APA Film Festival in partnership with APA Film, a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a nonprofit arts service organization. Asian Pacific American (APA) Film is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the artistic developed of APA media artists and raising public awareness of APA media arts through an annual festival and other events in the Washington, D.C. area.

In his bold, chilling feature film debut, Chinese opera director Chen Shi-zheng examines the bitter politics of academia and the clashing of disparate cultures. Liu Ye (CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER) plays Liu Xing, a modest but brilliant graduate student from Beijing who comes to an American university to study the origins of the universe under famed cosmologist Jacob Reiser (Aidan Quinn). Recognizing the student's enormous talent, Reiser turns Liu Xing into his protege, bringing him to prestigious academic conferences and inviting him to department gatherings outside the classroom. As a foreigner in a new environment, Liu Xing is acclimated into American culture by the kind and well-meaning Joanna Silver, a wealthy university patron played by Meryl Streep, and an American waitress at a nearby cafe, with whom he strikes up a casual flirtation. During his tireless research on dark matter, the unseen substance that shapes the universe, Liu Xing stumbles across findings that threaten Reiser's established model. This year's theme is "Asia in Nature - Earth, Rivers & Mountains”. Multiple local/regional Asian dance troupes will each present a dance segment that illustrates their ties to their natural environment. Through their movements and depictions, audiences will experience their love, pain, attachment, dependence, reverence as well as apprehension to their natural environment.
The Kennedy Center co-presents this festival with the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

2007 NAAAP NATIONAL CONVENTION AND DIVERSITY CAREER FAIR ATTRACTED MORE THAN 1000 ATTENDEES
ATLANTA, GEORGIA

The National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) Atlanta chapter played host to the 21st Annual NAAAP National Convention and Diversity Career Fair from August 16th through 18th, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta Hotel.

This year’s theme "Catalyst for Growth: Awareness. Opportunity. Leadership.” attracted more than 600 convention attendees and over 1000 participants for the diversity career fair. The two-day convention featured 22 workshops and over 50 national and local workshop speakers that focused their message on leadership, professional development, management, entrepreneurship, diversity, Asian lifestyle, and community service. The diversity career fair attracted over 50 exhibiting regional, multi-national and international companies. Convention attendees also enjoyed the NAAAP National Convention Leadership Awards Gala on Friday which honored various NAAAP chapters with excellence awards for Chapter & Venture of the Year, Membership, Professional Development, Community Involvement, Communications and Projects & Programs.

The Friday gala concluded with cultural performances and entertainment by dancer Yu Wei, comedian Henry Cho and Vega String Quartet. Attendees also enjoyed Saturday’s Chopstix for Charity Fundraising Gala, a premier annual NAAAP-Atlanta event, with 100% of the proceeds going back to the local Asian-American non-profit community organizations in the form of grants.

United States Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao addressed over 700 Asian American professionals during the Friday keynote luncheon. Chao stressed the importance of education, training and re-training as keys to future employment and earnings for America’s workforce. She outlined several initiatives by the current administration to support worker training, education and employment service programs. Secretary Chao concluded in her closing remarks, “As I’ve said many times before – America is a beacon of hope and opportunity throughout the world and we shouldn’t fear the worldwide economy. America’s greatest strength lie in our democratic institutions, respect for the rule of law, transparency, accountability and the most creative and compassionate workforce in the world. These unique qualities comprise our country’s strongest competitive advantage." Secretary Chao currently serves as the 24th United States Secretary of Labor in the Cabinet of President of the United States, George W. Bush. She is the first Asian American woman and first Chinese American to be appointed to a President's Cabinet in American history. Other top Asian-American executives that provide keynote addresses during the convention are Esther Lee (Euro RSCG Worldwide), Ken Lee (UPS), Sonya Gong (State Farm Insurance), and Jayaraman (Raghu) Raghuraman (Dell, Inc.).

The keynotes all shared their professional and personal journeys as Asian-American professionals navigating their careers in the public and private sectors of the corporate world. The National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP), is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization where Asian American and Asian Canadian professionals from across North America can work together to enhance North American Asian leadership in various professions and their communities. NAAAP serve to educate members through professional development, raise Asian American awareness in corporate America, and ensure that Asian Americans are included in diversity programs. Blaisdell, Senior Financial Planner, Ken Furuya, Financial Planner, and Stan Kryjak, Operations and Controls Manager, who discussed opportunities for Asian Americans with Prudential Financial . We hope that you were able to get out of your apartment or house and enjoy the many activities that DC had to offer. Personally, I had a great time watching our Washington Nationals pounce on the visiting Chicago Cubs, beating them 6-0, including a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth. Sweet.

We would like to welcome the newest NAAAP-DC Board member to our team - Wendy Kai Sung. Wendy has joined our Board, effective June 25th, and will prove to be a valuable addition to our team. Her proactivity, coupled with her interpersonal communication skill set, will be value-add immediately.

She will be working with Dave Tam and Teach Roberts on Social Events and help out Francis Tong and Hoi Ming Ho with PR and Marketing as well. Welcome aboard~

We had 20+ people come out and bowl, meetup and network. Great conversation, some exciting bowling as well. One of the attendees hit the center red pin with a strike and received a free party for 16 people!! Congrats Nathan!! Thanks to Wendy Kai Sung for helping spearhead this event and Christian, our president, for taking time out to come and bowl!!

Heather Sheu, a Sr. Compensation Analyst from a financial services company, and Dave Tam, an Account Manager at the IT staffing Softworld will discuss the "dos and don'ts" of writing a highly marketable resume. Heather and Dave will discuss how best to write your resume to get you that interview and eventually land the job. Dave will also discuss some of the hottest IT jobs in the DC area that are available through Softworld while Heather will discuss some of the other non-IT related hot jobs in the market.

21st Annual NAAAP National Convention and Diversity Career Fair Comes to Atlanta in August 2007

The National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP)'s 21st Annual NAAAP National Convention and Diversity Career Fair will be in Atlanta from August 16 - 19, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. This year, the convention boasts the theme of "Catalyst for Growth: Awareness, Opportunity, Leadership". The NAAAP-Atlanta chapter was named "Chapter of the Year in 2005" and again in 2006 by NAAAP National. Mobilizing over fifty local and national volunteers in the planning process, the NAAAP Convention Planning Co-chairs expect an equally dynamic atmosphere during the convention and will play host to APA professionals and corporate sponsors as they come together to promote the professional development of APAs across North America.

"We are excited to host the NAAAP National Convention in our home city, and look forward to sharing our energy and enthusiasm with our convention guests in August," says Brenda Tran, president of the NAAAP-Atlanta chapter. Adds Betty Lo, one of three co-chairs of the National Convention, "We have taken best practices established by previous conventions, and have come up with new programs this year to make this a memorable experience for our attendees and sponsors ."

NAAAP-DC Achieves 501(c)(3) Status!

Congratulations goes out to NAAAP-DC for achieving Federal 501(c)(3) status - we are now a fully-recognized non-profit organization. Incredible amount of thanks goes out to both Dwayne Sye and Christian Oh for spearheading this effort. The process was long and arduous - the team had to fill out a whole new application months into the process; however, Dwayne and Christian were able to utilize their 4.0 GPAs and astute acumen in completing the complex application forms.
